12 Natural Pest Control Methods That Work on Indian Crops

Summary

From neem spray to companion planting — protect your crops without a single chemical.

Why Go Chemical-Free for Pest Control?

Chemical pesticides kill pests — but they also kill beneficial insects (bees, ladybugs, ground beetles), contaminate groundwater, build up in the food chain, and create pesticide-resistant super-pests over time. Organic pest control methods work with nature rather than against it, protecting your soil ecosystem while still managing infestations effectively.

12 Methods That Work

1. Neem Oil Spray — India's most effective natural pesticide. Mix 5ml cold-pressed neem oil + 1ml liquid dish soap in 1L water. Spray on affected plants every 7–10 days, preferably in the evening. Controls aphids, whitefly, spider mites, leaf miners, and over 200 species of insects.

2. Companion Planting — Marigolds planted alongside tomatoes repel nematodes. Basil near brinjal repels thrips. Onions near carrots repel carrot fly. These are time-tested Indian farming traditions with real scientific backing.

3. Sticky Traps — Yellow sticky traps attract and capture whitefly and fungus gnats. Blue traps attract thrips. Available in packs of 10 for ₹50–100 online. Hang them at plant height.

4. Neem Cake Soil Treatment — Mix neem cake into soil at planting time (100g per square foot of soil). It controls soil-borne pathogens and nematodes while also slowly releasing nitrogen as a fertiliser. Available at agricultural stores for ₹15–25 per kg.

5. Garlic-Chilli Spray — Blend 10 garlic cloves + 5 green chillies with 500ml water. Strain and dilute in 5 litres of water. An effective repellent spray for most soft-bodied insects. Free to make and incredibly effective.
